The Yu Group at UC Berkeley Statistics and EECS has compiled, cleaned and continues to update a large corpus of hospital- and county-level data from a variety of public sources to aid data science efforts to combat COVID-19. At the hospital level, our data include the location of the hospital, the number of ICU beds, the total number of employees, and the hospital type.

Professor Bin Yu and her team are developing models to connect hospitals with needed supplies. Their work with the nonprofit organization Response4Life is described in this news article from the College of Engineering.
The new Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) received an anonymous $252 million anchor gift for the construction of the Data Hub building. The Data Hub, on the site of the old Tolman building, will be the brick-and-mortar home of data science on campus.

Ashwin Pananjady is a PhD student in EECS, co-advised by Martin Wainwright and Thomas Courtade. This competitive award is given annually to three PhD students who will present their work at an invited session as part of the IMS Annual Meeting.
Congratulations to Statistics PhD students Olivia Angiuli, Eli Ben-Michael, Bryan Liu, and Zoe Vernon on winning the $20K first place prize at the 2019 Berkeley Datathon sponsored by Citadel. They will be going to the Data Open Championship in 2020 to compete for the $100K grand prize (for which Statistics PhD students Soren Kunzel and Jake Soloff were on the winning team two years ago).

Professor Ani Adhikari is the recipient of a 2019 Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of GSIs.

The Berkeley Statistics mixer at JSM 2019 had a great turn-out as usual and people had a fun time catching up and sharing news: professional and personal. Yesterday, Tuesday, May 21, 2019, was our annual Statistics Department commencement ceremony. This year the Statistics Department was back in Wheeler Auditorium and we had a packed house with family, friends, and 133 undergrads, 23 Master's, & 13 PhDs. More graduates than ever before! This year's commencement speaker was Amanda Cox, Data Editor of the New York Times.
