Ching-Shui Cheng, 1950-2026

Professor Emeritus Ching-Shui Cheng passed away on June 7th, 2026. Ching-Shui joined the Berkeley faculty in 1977 and served until his early retirement in 2013. Following his tenure here, he joined the Institute of Statistical Science at Academia Sinica in Taiwan, where he served two terms as Director.

Sequoia's career path highlights the versatility of statistics, moving her from safety engineering at NASA to current research in climate and emissions monitoring.

Commencement 2025

The UC Berkeley Department of Statistics celebrated the graduates of the class of 2025 on Wednesday, May 22nd, at Zellerbach Playhouse on the Berkeley campus. Department Chair Haiyan Huang led commencement activities, which featured an address by Nobel Laureate Guido Imbens.

Raban in Grad Slam Competition

Current Ph.D. student and alum Daniel Raban (B.A. Mathematics, 2018) was a finalist at the 2025 UC Berkeley Grad Slam competition. Grad Slam is a UC-wide sponsored competition designed to showcase graduate student research in three-minute talks for a general audience.
