Statistics Ph.D. student João Vitor Romano has been awarded a fellowship from The Voleon Group for the 2026-27 academic year.

Statistics Ph.D. student Kaihao Jing has been awarded a fellowship for the 2026-27 academic year from Citadel Securities. A gold-level partner with Berkeley Statistics' Industry Alliance Program, Citadel is one of the world's leading securities firms.

Assistant Professor Amanda Coston has been awarded a significant research grant by the Hellman Foundation. Founded in 1994 by Chris and Warren Hellman, the foundation provides grants to colleges and universities in support of junior faculty research.

The Department of Statistics will remain open in Evans Hall through 8/10/2026.  For the week of 8/10-8/14 the Department will be operating remotely.  As of 8/17/2026, all operations and personnel in the Department of Statistics will be housed in the Barbara and Gerson Bakar Gateway building. Updates and information will be shared as they are available.

Over the last decade, Professor Bin Yu and her research group have pioneered and refined a new data science paradigm called Veridical Data Science (VDS), beginning with a 2020 PNAS paper co-authored by Yu and her former Ph.D. student K. Kumbir.

Professor Emeritus Ching-Shui Cheng passed away on June 7th, 2026. Ching-Shui joined the Berkeley faculty in 1977 and served until his early retirement in 2013. Following his tenure here, he joined the Institute of Statistical Science at Academia Sinica in Taiwan, where he served two terms as Director.

Current Berkeley Statistics Ph.D students Abdullah Ateyeh and Claire Macnamara Morton have been named 2026 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program award winners.

Professor of the Graduate School Peter Bartlett is one of six Berkeley faculty members recently inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 2026.
